How Do Genes Affect My Weight?

Occasionally, I like to pass along information that comes across my desk.  I've been asked to consult with Igniteplay and Spaplay with regard to genetic testing and how this information may help coaches, such as myself, develop highly tailored, genetically accurate, training, weight loss, and nutrition plans for individuals.  I'm an information guru.  The more information I have about a client, the better I am able to coach them.  DNA testing is yet another tool in our arsenal to fight disease.  Read the except (from author, Lisa Andres) and let me know your thoughts.  Information about the test, ThinnerGene, is available below.

How Do My Genes Affect My Weight?

thinnergenenotext.png

Variations in our genes make us unique.  These variations can influence our weight by affecting how our body responds to exercise and to certain nutrients like proteins, carbohydrates and fats. They can also affect how we respond to training and how well we perform at power and endurance sports.

Will Exercise Help You Lose Weight?

There are a number of genes that influence your weight by affecting how your body responds to exercise. One example is the FTO gene.  If you have one type of variation in this gene, then being physically active, especially through aerobic activity, will be critical for helping you achieve a healthy weight.,, If you have another variation of this gene, then exercise, although important for maintaining your health, is less likely to impact your weight.

Will a Specific Diet Help You Lose Weight?
oliveoilusda mediteranean.jpg

Variations in your genes can also influence your weight by affecting how your body responds to different types of macronutrients like proteins, carbohydrates and fats. The PPARG gene, for example, affects how our bodies store and break down the fats that we eat.  People with a particular variant of this gene are less likely to be overweight if they eat a “Mediterranean” style diet.  Mediterranean style diets are high in a particular type of fat called MUFA which is found in foods like olive oil, avocado and nuts. However, people with a different variant of this gene, do better with a diet that is low in ALL fats.

Are you a Power or Endurance Athlete?
Your predisposition to being a power or endurance athlete is influenced in part by your genes. One gene that appears to be involved in athletic performance is the ACE gene. The ACE gene has many functions including controlling blood pressure. Variations in this gene can also influence power and endurance.

Athletes with  specific variation of the ACE gene tend to have increased power performance, and gain increased strength from training.  They are, therefore, more likely to be power athletes like sprinters and short distance swimmers.   Athletes with a different variation, on the other hand, tend to have increased endurance, higher VO2max and greater metabolic response from training. They are, therefore, more likely to be endurance swimmers, long distance runners, triathletes, and elite high altitude climbers.
How Can Testing Your Genes Help You?
thinnergene_logo.png

Testing for different gene variations can give you insights into what diet, exercise and training plan might be best for you.  When undergoing testing, it’s beneficial to have a consultation with a health & wellness provider like Kathy Kent who can help you put your results into action.   We are currently developing ThinnerGene, a DNA test that will look for gene variations that can influence your weight by affecting your body’s response to exercise and macronutrients like carbohydrates, proteins and fats. The results of this test will include a diet and exercise program customized to your genes.   To get advanced access to this test signup here.

Free Workout Friday: Theraband Workout #5 Pilates and Core with Theraband

Here's my guest coach, Nicole Miller, who joined us on the 365fitt Healthy Active Living Trip to Captiva Island, FL February 1-8, 2014.  Nicole is demonstrating for us a beautiful pilates move.  What I like most about this video is how you can do a progression.  For a beginner, wrap the theraband around your back, lean back slightly making your abdominals tight, and bring your arms forward.  For the lower body, you'll draw your knees in, which, as a beginner, you can do one at a time, until you become stronger.  Finally, put the arms and legs together simultaneously for a more advanced workout; very much like a crunch.  You'll utilize some great back and core stabilizing muscles on this one!  Strive for 15 and watch your form and focus on quality!

Free Workout Friday: Theraband Workout #4: Core and Total Body

Here's my guest coach, Nicole Miller, who joined us on the 365fitt Healthy Active Living Trip to Captiva Island, FL February 1-8, 2014.  Nicole is demonstrating for us another great combination, this time for your upper back and hamstrings.  Remember to keep your back straight, hinging at the hips, as you bend forward.  I love the advanced move, which puts one leg in front of the other.   Nicole states, do 15-20, or about 15 on each side, if doing one leg in front.   Watch your form and focus on quality!  Great job, Nicole!

Free Workout Friday: Theraband Workout #3 Triceps, Hip Core Stabilizers

Here's my guest coach, Nicole Miller, who joined us on the 365fitt Healthy Active Living Trip to Captiva Island, FL February 1-8, 2014.  Nicole is demonstrating for us a great combination using an overhead triceps press with the theraband with a leg abduction.  Of course, this is awesome for that wiggly, jiggly triceps (not you, right?), but when you add the leg abduction, you work on strengthening the hip, outer thigh and core you get a multi-dimensional workout, not to mention super how great it is for your balance!  Incorporate these into your workout, performing 10 on each side (less if you're new to this exercise).  Also, if you're new to this exercise, you can do them singly.  If you're more advanced, do them standing on a BOSU.  Watch your form and focus on quality!

83 Years Young and Living 365fitt!

83 Years Young!

83 Years Young!

And Younger Next Year!

I love meeting people on the trail, hiking in the Rocky Mountains, and this is exactly why I do it.

Today, I met this nice young lady.  She didn't hesitate to tell me that she was 83 years of age.  Boy, she sure didn't look it!  She had the biggest smile on her face and her eyes twinkled behind her sunglasses.  She was fit and strong and appeared to be very happy.  She was beautiful!

And, she was on her way back down from a 5.4 mile (roundtrip) hike to Ouzel Falls, in Rocky Mountain National Park.  She and her friend (also 83 years young) climbed 1,000 feet in elevation this morning.

I just loved the way they both embraced healthy living; getting outdoors and being physically active.  Wow!  I was impressed!

Of course, they noticed my 365fitt T-shirt and head scarf and asked what I was doing.  When I explained that I take groups of women on Healthy Active Living trips, they both perked up and exclaimed, "We want to join you!  Do you take 83 year old women?"  I proudly said, "Yes, it's all about YOU!  This is YOUR journey and MY job is to make sure that each person's journey is successful on a personal level."

The lesson learned:  Stay Active.  Stay Healthy.  Stay Involved!  Enjoy life!

No matter your age.

Celebrating 365 Days of Living 365fitt!

Galena, IL Local Celebration
When something doesn't work for you anymore, it's time for a change.  So, I took my old tired company (Midwest Heart Cycling, Inc.), which had been in business since 2001, and put it to rest.

365fitt is my new company.

It has a new feel and a new focus on health and fitness and lifestyle wellness.  And, I'm proud to announce that the doors have been open for 365 days.  It's time to celebrate!

The statistics of one year of being in business

I thought you might find the statistics interesting on what it means to have been in business one year.  Google Analytics makes it easy (and necessary) for a business owner to track customers and potential customers.

Google Analytics tells me that my website has had over 1,400 unique visitors in one year, with growth averaging now 300 visitors every month.  Of these visitors, 38% are new each month That's good for me because it tells me that I'm reaching approximately 100 new people each month.  It also means that 62% are returning customers, and that's good for me too.    In total, all of these visitors viewed over 8,000 pages (events, training, about), viewing an average of 3.5 pages with each visit.  The average visitor spends just 3 1/2 minutes on my site, which is actually well over the industry average. Over 30% of the total visits to my site are referred via social media, including facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Blogger, to name the most popular, and 24% of viewers to my website are using a smart phone.  Pretty interesting, right?

I've written 88 posts for my Blog which has had over 21,000 views in one year, with the most popular being:
On Pinterest, a social media site that uses pictures to say  a thousand words, I have 95 followers, with the most popular repin being the Yoga Moon Salutation.

On YouTube, the most popular video is the Basic Pilates with 365fitt,  22 minute video with instruction for beginners.  The goal when recording this video was to give people some basic instruction with quality form so that people could do a short pilates routine at home while watching a video on their television or computer.  The most recent comment I received on this was that the it was easy to see the movements (muscles) I was describing.  In total 365fitt has uploaded 52 videos.

Partnerships improve the overall strength of a business

But analytics and statistics are not the only way to measure success.  As part of my business plan, I've made it a priority to partner with both local and national companies and individuals to bring depth to my services.  Nationally, I've partnered with Heart Zones USA and ZONING Fitness to bring the best cardiovascular solutions to my clients.  Locally (Galena, IL), I've partnered with The Galena Territory and Midwest Medical Fitness Center to bring quality classes to the local community. I've partnered with local businesses like Fever River Outfitters, and social groups like MeetUp (Driftless Area Group) to provide even more opportunities to lead an active life outside of a gym.  I've even partnered with local resorts like Chestnut Mountain Resort and the Goldmoor Inn to provide both activity and educational events for women.

I've added a handful of some very experienced trainers and consultants to the 365fitt Team.  Sally Edwards, Laurie Croft, Alinda Perrine, Dorothy Sagar, Jennifer Karraker-Baldwin, and Sandra Principe have all partnered with 365fitt in some way to bring more adventure, more knowledge, more activity, more stress-relief, and/or more enjoyment to our training and our Healthy Active Living trips.  For more information on our team, please visit 365fitt.com.

Healthy Active Living Trips

Feb 2-8, 2013 Captiva Island, FL Trip
We will have planned for and taken 3 trips as of this summer.  The "Walk It Off" trip to Sanibel Island was so successful that I made a major decision to expand it to include a larger group in a very prestigious home on Captiva Island.  I've also brought in three additional coaches to help out and lend expertise to this VIP trip.  365fitt will travel twice to the Rocky Mountains this summer leading groups of women to "new heights"!  Most importantly, plans are being made to expand these offerings to new destinations in 2014 and 2015.  (If you want to be a co-sponsor of a trip, please visit my information page and/or email me.)

Products and services to meet the needs of customers and clients

365fitt has grown over the last 365 days to meet the needs of existing and new clients, by offering more products and more trips.  When I work with clients, they always get individualized workouts.  But as part of Free Workout Fridays, I've created and uploaded more than 28 workouts to my Resources, so that everyone can enjoy new workouts every week.   I try to Pin these workouts and I'm in the process of compiling them into another great e-product.
In addition to that, I've created a new product called 365fitt 10 Minute Workouts.  This is a great e-product (downloadable pdf) with 10 different 10 minute routines.  Mix and match them to suit your needs.  There's over a million combinations!

I'm continually striving to find the right products that will make it easier for everyone to get moving, so that in the end, no one will be able to say they didn't have the time.

Galena Territory Events
So, how does a company go about celebrating a one year anniversary?  With a big celebration!  (See the image at the top of this blog for a complete schedule.) I've got a ribbon cutting ceremony and Open House at my new in-home studio. I'll be celebrating with small receptions at two of my local business partners, Midwest Medical Fitness Center and Fever River Outfitters.  I have a full day of free classes, seminars and health assessments at the Galena Territory Homeowners Club.

And, finally, to keep the buzz and good vibrations going, I'll be doing a very exciting day of give aways, raffles, prizes, coupons, and gifts on Cyber-Friday, June 28th. I've got free workouts, free head scarfs, T-shirts, bags, heart rate monitors, training and even a free trip to Captiva Island!

"Like" 365fitt on Facebook, and sign up for the email newsletter (from either 365fitt facebook page, or the 365fitt Home) to make sure you get notifications!

Eating to Ease Inflammation

If you have chronic inflammation (as I do), then here's my Top 10 list of foods to avoid and foods to consume.

Inflammation is actually a good thing.  When you break your wrist, the wrist swells in an attempt to "stabilize" the joint.  When you cut your finger, the surrounding area swells with fluids designed to protect the wound.  When you bang your shin, you might get a bruise or slight "bump" which is your body sending fluid to protect that sight (bone) from further injury.  Of course, that's simplified.  When you have plantar fascitis, the fascia that runs from footpad to heel becomes "irritated", and fluid rushes to the site to add a cushion of relief.  (In fact, this is the theory behind kinesio tape, a popular physical therapy remedy these days.  Kinesio tape works to "lift" the skin away from the inflammed tissue, thus providing a pathway for the fluid to move away from the injured site, reducing inflammation and the associated pain.)  Again, I've simplified that also.  Arthritis is an inflammation, typically between the joints.  Many sufferers of arthritis have swollen joints (fluid/inflammation) to ease the pain from lack of cartilage in the joint.

But - when inflammation is chronic, individuals are at high risk for other diseases.  (Great article on the intricacies of disease and inflammation in our body.)

Aside from a steady stream of NSAIDS, a change in diet high in anti-inflammatory foods surely cannot hurt.  The Anti-Inflammatory Food Pyramid is a nice visual.  Foods at the bottom can be consumed in volume, while foods at the top of the pyramid should be consumed sparingly, if at all.

Please visit the resource section of my website at 365fitt.com for a free newsletter on How Colorful Foods Fight Disease, and more!

The Glycemic Index: Need to Know Facts

Diets based on the glycemic index help regulate blood glucose levels and potentially lead to weight loss and and the reduction of chronic diseases.  Is a low glycemic diet right for you?

What is the Glycemic Index?

Basic definition:  The glycemic Index measures how much and how fast a food raises glucose levels in the blood.

More specific definition:  The glycemic index (GI) provides a measure of how quickly blood sugar levels (i.e. levels of glucose in the blood) rise after eating a particular type of food. The effects that different foods have on blood sugar levels vary considerably. The glycemic index estimates how much each gram of available carbohydrate (total carbohydrate minus fiber) in a food raises a person's blood glucose level following consumption of the food, relative to consumption of pure glucose. Glucose has a glycemic index of 100. A practical limitation of the glycemic index is that it does not take into account the amount of carbohydrate actually consumed. A related measure, the glycemic load, factors this in by multiplying the glycemic index of the food in question by the carbohydrate content of the actual serving. (source: Wikipedia)

The Mayo Clinic on the Glycemic Index (diet):  Proponents of the glycemic index diet, sometimes called a low GI diet, say that high blood sugar levels are linked to a variety of health problems, including diabetes, obesity and heart disease. They say that following a diet based on the glycemic index can help you choose foods that will result in weight loss and prevention of chronic diseases. But scientific evidence supporting the role of the glycemic index diet in weight loss remains mixed. And you might be able to achieve the same health benefits by eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight and getting enough exercise.

You Might Want To Be On a Low Glycemic Diet if you need to monitor your blood glucose levels (i.e. you are diabetic or are pre-diabetic), you need (or want) to change your overall eating habits, and/or you don't want to go "low carb" or count calories.

Source: www.lowgihealth.com.au
The Glycemic Index Scoring System:
  1. High: 70 and up. Examples include instant white rice, brown rice, plain white bread, white skinless baked potato, boiled red potatoes with skin and watermelon.
  2. Medium: 56 to 69. Examples include sweet corn, bananas, raw pineapple, raisins and certain types of ice cream.
  3. Low: 55 and under. Examples include raw carrots, peanuts, raw apple, grapefruit, peas, skim milk, kidney beans and lentils.
No surprise that a lot of high glycemic foods are processed, taste sweet and/or satisfy that craving for "carbs".

For a free copy of hundreds of foods (excel spreadsheet) with their respective glycemic index and glycemic load values, please visit my resource page at 365fitt.com.

Free Workout Friday - 100 Pushups!

Yes, today's free workout is 100 pushups!  So, you don't think you can do it?  Yes, you can and I challenge you to give it a try.  Pushups are a great way to build the upper body and create a healthy shoulder joint.  By breaking the 100 pushups into 10 sets of 10, you get a breather and your arms get a break.

For advanced individuals, you can do pushups with some variations (and there's lots more that really push the limits, but I won't mention them here):
Stability Ball pushups - total core!
For beginners and intermediate individuals here are some examples of modifications:
Have fun with the workout today!  And come back for more!

Free Workout Friday: Just Get Out!

It's the day after Draco:  the first winter storm of the season.  Draco dumped about 12" of snow, followed by winds gusting to 45mph (I think they may have been higher by the sounds of my creaking house), and blizzardlike conditions in Jo Daviess County, Illinois.  Today, however, it's just plain cold outside, 14 degrees.  And it's beautiful.  And it's sunny.  And there's minimal wind.  Conditions are perfect to get outside and get in a workout.

With winter conditions, you have to dress right.  First rule is to stay dry, inside and out.  Nothing will chill you faster than wet clothes and gloves.  A dry outer layer (snowpants or goretex pants) are a necessary layer and help protect against the wind too.  But layer appropriately, because if you OVER layer, you'll sweat up a storm, and that could chill you as well.  Opt for moisture wicking layers.  Cover your head, and your face (I love my head scarfs) as most heat leaves your body through your head.  Watch the fingers and toes and stay out only as long as you are dressed appropriately.  My rule of thumb is that for every 15 degree drop in temperature, add an extra layer on top.  Keep your core warm.

Now that you're ready for the outside, what can you do for a workout?

Walk-hike:  Safety precautions first...if there's icy conditions, use something like YakTrax to prevent slips and falls.  However, in the snow - go for it!  Walking in deep snow is HARD!  It works your hip flexor muscles (top of the thigh at hip level), your butt and your quads.

Poles:  Grab a set of poles (or a couple of walking sticks) and use those upper arms (phew, my arms feel it today from snow shoeing yesterday with poles).

Snowshoe:  Get some 'shoes and walk on top of the snow.  It's so fun.  If you haven't tried it, you should.  It's just like walking on big shoes.  Great workout for the glutes, butt, legs and arms, if you use poles.  It's my favorite winter activity!  (Locally, rent at Fever River Outfitters, downtown Galena, IL)

Cross Country Ski:  Awesome total body workout.  Google around for area trails and rentals if you don't own your own equipment.

Downhill Ski:  Awesome if you're around a ski resort, although equipment rental and lift tickets could set you back a bit. (locally, check out Chestnut Mountain Resort).

Basically, if you want a real free workout today - just get outside and enjoy, whether you have 12" of snow, or sunshine and warmth!

The Anatomy of a Diet Scam

I'm sure you've seen the ads on your homepage to your email or facebook accounts.  They are always very similar.  Most recently, this one popped up about Rachel Ray losing 27 pounds in 4 weeks, and 47 pounds in 2 months with Raspberry Ketone Extract!

Last week, Rachel Ray lost 27 pounds with the Green Coffee Bean Diet.

Last month it was the African Mango Extract Diet.

These are all diet scams that all read the same.  Let's take a look at the anatomy of a diet scam.

1.  They appear in highly visible spaces:  facebook ads and magazines.  No wonder, as they target women in the 20-50 age market.
2.  A celebrity (in this case, Rachel Ray) gets your attention.  What many people don't know is that Rachel did not give her endorsement of this product.
3.  A celebrity doctor (in this case, Dr. Oz) to give credibility to the product.  These are associations, not endorsements, and often are without permission.
4.  Astounding claims of weight loss.  27 pounds (see Rachel Ray above) in 4 weeks is 7 pounds a week, double to triple what is medically advised for weight loss.
5.  A medical journal (in this case, The Journal of Lipids in Health and Disease - Lipids in Health and Disease is an open access, peer-reviewed, online journal that publishes articles on all aspects of lipids: their biochemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, role in health and disease, and the synthesis of new lipid compounds.; is cited to give credibility to the product.
6.  A review of "we were skeptical" so we put it to the test ourselves appears in all advertisements.
7.  A success story of an individual who bought the products and achieved results.
8.  A description of what products were necessary for the weight loss.  In all cases, the product, whether Raspberry Ketone Extract, African Mango Extract, and/or Green Coffee Bean were all combined with a colon cleanse product. (With further research, they give you a very specific calorie restricted plan to adhere to for results and for proper effect of the colon cleanse; they just don't "advertise" the special restricted diet because it would be a turn off for many who want a quick and easy pill for weight loss.)
9.  A great offer - too good to be true - buy for the low, low price (and then you get on a monthly subscription at the regular price of course.)
10.  Supplies limited.  It says it every month.  Order now before supplies are gone.

So, now you have it.  The anatomy of a diet scam.  Next time you see an advertisement for weight loss that sounds too good to be true, without diet or exercise, run.  Run very fast in the other direction.

Live and eat 365fitt,
Coach Kathy

Free Workout Friday: Great Yoga Poses

The Moon Salutation is a great series of yoga poses.  The poses work the spine, the hips and muscles of the legs, the core, (both abdominals and back) and shoulders.  It is an excellent total body strengthening and flexiblity routine.  The pictures are initiated with the right leg/side, therefore, you will need to do them a second time on the left side.  I've put my own twist on them, however, to bring you what I consider the best of the series:

First time through, go slowly and warm up your entire body.  If you're particularly stiff, you may want to go through this slowly another time.  Take the time to get the breath right:  Inhale up to mountain lifting through the ribs and chest. Exhale to forward fold then inhale to a slight lift.  Exhale to low lunge, inhale to plank (stepping back with other leg), exhale to low plank, inhale to upward facing dog, exhale to downdog, inhale (and step forward) to low lunge, exhale (and step forward with other leg) to forward fold, inhale up to mountain or backward bend, and exhale back to prayer.

After warming up, complete the pose series three additional times (yes, three on each side), increasing the pace to bring your heart rate up.

After you've completed that, repeat the series much slower, holding the poses longer for increased strength and flexibility.  This will require a strong mental attitude.  Take the time to settle, breathe, and relax into each position.

Finally, repeat the series one more time through for breath control and cool down.

Breath 365fitt,
Kathy
ps.  my disclaimer is that I am not a certified yoga instructor, but I am knowledgeable of the poses and what it does for the body.  As with any workout, be mindful of how you feel, do not overstretch, and work into each pose as allowed by your current level of fitness.

Free Workout Friday - Totally Core Workout

It's Free Workout Friday and I hope you enjoy this great Totally Core Workout.  It's so simple you'll wonder why you didn't do it before.

I choose Plank a lot in my workouts because it's an awesome exercise, working arms, legs, glutes, abdominals and back.  Plus, there are a lot of variations for people with wrist issues (use forearms or kettlebells) or lack of core strength (drop to your knees for plank).

I use the side plank because it works your obliques and supporting muscles into the frontal abdominals and back transverse muscles.

I also use superman a lot because it strengthens the muscles along the spine from cervical to coccyx.

Most recently, I've uploaded a video on Youtube that demonstrates all these moves.

Enjoy your workout today and everyday,
Kathy

Free Workout Friday Swimming With the Hips

Today's Free Workout Friday is another great swimming workout, focusing on the biggest muscle in the body - the hips and core.  By utilizing your hips and core, you are able to swim more streamlined, more powerfully, and more efficiently.  When I showed this workout to one of my client's recently, she exclaimed, "I feel like a mermaid!  I love this new way of swimming!"

In fact, swimming has changed a lot in 30 years - in case you haven't had a swim lesson recently.  We swim smarter today, without wasting energy.  We swim faster today, because we are smarter.

Rotating your hips, pressing belly button to the side of the pool, streamlines your body.  Think about developing those belly muscles, the core.  Try to initiate your moves from the abdominal muscles.  In the end, your core becomes stronger and you swim faster and enjoy yourself more!

Have fun, Happy laps,
Kathy

Free Workout Friday Swim Better In The Front Quadrant

Your Free Workout Friday is about swimming better and more efficiently.

The other day, I was watching a client swim and something that we had been working on, was still a problem.  Because people process instructions differently, I tossed quite a few drills at her to see what would work best.  I did this also because she was familiar with most of the drills, so as to not bombard her with too many new drills.

Her main problem was her right hand was entering wrist first, bending almost 45 degrees!  I could say that it was because her right elbow was dropping, that her wrist was hitting the water before her fingers and that might also be true.  It could also be that it is just a wimpy wrist.  We had worked on fingertip drag and catch up drills previously, but it just wasn't sticking.  Typically, I'll have a client work on a certain drill, until it becomes second nature.  However, when I don't see a client regularly, they often don't realize that they are slipping backwards again, forgetting what the correct technique looks like.  Thus, today we added a few more drills.  I think the "fist drill" will help her a lot, because the fist drill should force someone to pull with their entire forearm.  The fist must be pointed downward, or you just won't get the right pull.  So, here's to your free workout today!  Hop in the pool and give it a whirl!

Happy laps,
Kathy

Free Workout Friday Countdown Workout

Free Workout Friday

5 4 3 2 1 Total Body Workout

This is a great workout because it's for those with a little attention deficit.  You said you couldn't stay on a treadmill for 20 minutes because it was too boring.  You said you couldn't do any long sets of legs, core, and arms, because your mind drifted.  Well, I responded to your "excuses" with a workout that will keep your interest for 50 minutes start to finish.

Remember that a warmup is important to getting the blood flow to your working muscles, so please take more time to warmup if needed.

The basic design of the workout is as follows:
  • 5 minutes of warmup
  • 4 minutes of moderate cardio
  • 3 minutes of leg strengthening
  • 2 minutes of arm strengthening and toning
  • 1 minute of core
  •  Repeat 4x (not including the warmup)
  • 5 minutes cooldown
See the attached sheet for some suggested leg, arm and core strengthening exercises.

Beginners can do this workout 1x through for a 20 minute workout, and may also take more rest in between each exercise.

Short on time?  Do this workout 1-2x through fast and hard.  No rest, crank it out!

Intermediate enthusiasts can do this workout 2-3x through for a 30 or 40 minute workout.

Advanced individuals should do this workout 3-4x through, with little to no rest in between and can increase their cardio effort from moderate to hard.

Have fun this Friday and every Friday!  Share this workout with a friend!

All You Wanted to Know About Fad Diets and more!

OK, I'm not a comedian, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night.  Really!  No, Really! I did!

WARNING:  FAD DIETS HAVE ALL THE FOLLOWING IN COMMON:

  • Promises rapid weight loss
  • Uses before and after photos
  • Uses testimonials with extreme results
  • Utilizes statements by "nutritional experts"
  • Requires no exercise, or
  • Requires extreme exercise (often very hard)
  • Restricts your food choices, sometimes to only 1 item
  • Is not balanced
Today, I was saw an add for African Mango Extract, the latest in a long line of diets and products that promise easy weight loss quickly!  Dr. Oz even called it a "breakthrough supplement" and a "miracle in your medicine cabinet".  (There's your "expert" statement).  When I went to the website, it reported an average weight loss of 12.5 pounds in 28 days.  There were testimonials with astonishing results.  There is no exercise required.  Oh, yeah...it works best when combined with a colon cleanse.  No wonder it works; clean out the sludge, limit the foods and buy our product!  Oh yeah...you'll lose that stubborn belly fat, too.  (I'm only including the link here so you can see for yourself just how slick this marketing campaign really is.  Click here.)

Last month, I'm going to call it the Amberen Diet, a slick new pill that helps menopausal women lose weight after 40, especially stubborn belly fat.  (That's about 85% of that demographic.)  If you go to the website (see previous blog), you'll see the same thing:  expert testimonials, pictures, and a buy button.  It is also sold with an attempt to get you to exercise and eat right by including pamplets for your entertainment.

There was also the "Lose 24 pounds in A Week Crash Diet Approved by Dr. Oz"  (see my previous blog post).  First, it's connected to Dr. Oz ("expert").  Second, it's a strict diet that will make you lose water weight first, then pounds quickly.  As a crash diet, it will work, although you might only lose 1/4th of what it claims.  However, without making lifestyle changes permanently, this diet will also fail and you'll end up on a yo-yo.

Last year, it was the Acai Berry Diet.  Acai is an extract from berries, is known as a powerful antioxidant and it has also been linked to fast weight loss.  Because it was "associated" with Oprah and Dr. Oz, it has grown in popularity and internet marketers are using them illegally as "endorsements".  It fits the description of a fad diet.

Fad diets have been around for years.  Here's some of the more funny fad diets:

The advertising for "Fat-O-NO" on display at Minnesota's Museum of Questionable Medical Devices, promises a tablet that "helped over 100,000 women to their normal weight" and was purportedly "recommended by doctors and chemists everywhere" and required "no starvation diets or strenuous exercise."
  • Alcohol only diet - William the Conquerer (yeah...he died)
  • Atkins diet, South Beach diet,  Kremlin diet, Low carb diet, Low fat diet
  • Astronaut diet (500 calories/day), Scarsdale diet (very low calorie diet)
  • Cabbage Soup diet - 7 day diet of nothing but cabbage soup!  Yummy!
  • F-Plan diet, (1,500 caloires/day), high fiber leading to F = flatulence
  • Zone diet, a balanced approach to better eating
  • Sleeping Beauty diet - Elvis Presley (sleeping pills to sleep more, eat less!)
  • Optifast diet - Oprah, (800 calories/day)
  • Blood Type diet - pretty self explanatory
  • 1981 Beverly Hills diet - eat what the stars do, because they look good
  • 1830's - Graham Cracker Diet
  • 1863 Banting diet (lean meat, vegetables, fruits, low carb, no processed foods - they hardly existed!)
  • 1903 Masticator diet, aka Fletcherize diet (chew, but do not swallow), Rockefeller and Kellogg
By 1903, La Parle obesity soap that "never fails to reduce flesh" was selling at a pricey $1 a bar. The Louisenbad Reduction Salt pledged to "wash away your fat." Soon came an exercise machine, the Graybar Stimulator to jiggle the pounds. Bile Beans promoted a laxative approach.
  • 1917 Calorie Counting, advocated 1,200 calories/day
  • 1925 The Cigarette Diet, smoke more, eat less
  • 1928 The Inuit Meat and Fat Diet, protein and fat, little fruits and vegetables
  • 1930's The Hay Diet, separating foods (and enemas several times a week)
  • 1935 Diet Pills:
Dinitrophenol --  This chemical was used in the manufacture of dyes, insecticides and explosives.  Doctors found that it raised the body's metabolism, making it easier to burn calories. By 1935, an estimated 100,000 dieters had tried the pill for weight loss. Three years later, several cases of blindness -- and a few fatalities -- were linked to the drug, and it was taken off the market.
  • 1954 The Tapeworm Diet
1961 The Calories Don't Count Diet - eat as much as you want of a high protein diet, provided that you washed it down with three ounces of polyunsaturated vegetable oil, delivered in a pill he provided. The doctor was eventually convicted of mail fraud for peddling safflower oil capsules.
  • 1964 The Drinking Man's Diet, YES!  Beer and Meat
  • The Martinis and Whipped Cream Diet (this sounded crazy, but I had to include it)
  • The Grapefruit Diet, 1/2 grapefruit with every meal and bacon and eggs.  Yummy!
  • The HCG Diet - for another blog
  • The Paleo Diet - for another blog
The government's first advice to balance proteins, carbohydrates and fat came in 1894. A few years later, life insurance companies reported that being overweight raised the risk of death. In 1916, the Department of Agriculture came up with the five food groups. Around World War II, charts showing ideal weight-for-height emerged, surprisingly close to what today is considered a healthy body mass index.
Are fad diets worth it?  If losing weight quickly and not-permanently is your goal, then a fad diet will work for you.  But, so will getting rid of processed foods, consuming the right amounts of nutritious foods and moving your body more.   The difference is that a lifestyle of good choices will outweigh a fad diet any day, any year.

Long live 365fitt!
Kathy
