Sounds crazy, but it's true. Here are some of the reasons why enjoying your food may actually help you lose weight:
- Eat regularly; this way, you won't come to the table starved and eat too fast.
- Pay attention to what you are eating; this allows you to taste and savor your food, slowly.
- Notice the texture of foods; this will enhance your experience.
- Expand the variety of foods you eat; this alleviates boredom and increases excitement.
When your food is satisfying, or you have a positive experience (texture and variety, taste and savor), you are more apt to repeat that behavior, because of the positive reinforcement cycle.
The same holds true for negative reinforcement. Eat something that disagrees with you, causes you pain (gas?), bloating or nausea, and you're less apt to eat that same thing again.
Find foods you enjoy, take your time, try new foods, and eat regularly.
What effect does the environment have on your enjoyment of food? Plenty! Order Chinese at a nice restaurant, with a bottle of wine, flowers and wonderful service, and even white rice might taste good. Eat the same rice, out of a cardboard container in the front seat of your car, and it just doesn't taste the same. Contrary, eat a meal with good friends, and you'll most likely enjoy your food. Eat the same meal, surrounded by family fighting and bickering, and it might just spoil that food for you.
