- Wear your monitor around for a week, observe your heart rate while doing various activities, and write those numbers down. Do not pay attention to the flashing colored lights at this time.
- Make sure you do a variety of activities at a variety of intensities and write down how hard those activities are.
- At the end of a week, you should be able to follow the instructions in the picture.
Many heart rate monitors out there will have you enter your age and will use a formula like 220-age to calculate your maximum heart rate. From that number, they will automatically program your zones. The problem with that is that the formula is often wrong, thus your zones will be wrong and your workout will not be effective.
So, set your zones the right way. Use your own body and your current level of fitness to establish the right zones for your monitor. As your fitness improves, you can change your zones, fine tuning them to make them even more accurate, more specific and right for your current goals and training.
