Make a Contract with Yourself for Better Living

Why You Need a Contract

You say you want to lose weight, but you do nothing about it.  You say you want to start exercising, but another day goes by and you haven't.  You say you want to make better food choices, but, you don't.

What's going on is two-fold:

  1. You are not committed, and
  2. You don't have a plan.
How you go about making change is entirely up to you, but it may just start with a contract that you make with yourself - this most important person.
When you make a contract with yourself, and don't keep it, it's just like saying, "I don't matter" when, in fact, you do matter.  You are important enough.

When you make a contract and post it on your mirror to see every morning, it's a constant reminder of your commitment to yourself.  When you post it to the world, via Facebook or twitter, you're telling everyone that you're serious.  You're also asking for support to all that read it.  It says, "I'm going to change the way I do things, and I'm committed."

Here's my story of commitment:

In the winter of 1999, I committed to do my first Ironman Triathlon.  It was ten months away.  I knew what it would take to get to both the starting line as well as the finish line.  I had to train consistently, gradually building endurance in all three sports.  I knew I would have some very hard training days and some very long training days.  It was important to me that my training was quality.  I had a plan, and when I was sixteen weeks out, I revisited my plan, fine tuning it to fit both into my work and family schedules.  So, when I knew that I had to ride my bike 100 miles on a Sunday morning, I knew I couldn't enjoy a few beers the night before, because it would compromise my training, and if I compromised my training, I may just not reach the starting line, or the finish line of my race.

I tell you that story because for the duration of my training for my Ironman triathlon, I changed my lifestyle to reach my goal.  I made a contact with myself, I stuck to it, and it paid off.

And, it can work for you, too.  You may not be racing triathlons or even a 5K or 10K run.  You might just be trying to get your blood pressure under control, or strengthen your knees to avoid knee surgery, or just plain feel better about yourself.  It's all the same.

You have a goal.  You make the commitment.  You achieve your goal.
